One of the main requirements of United States Postal Service (USPS) is passing the drug test. The pre-employment drug test is mandatory for every applicant regardless of the postal service job. The applicant is required to give a drug test no sooner than three months prior to the hiring date. Only those individuals that pass the drug test are inducted as employees.   

USPS Drug Screening: An Overview

A drug test at the USPS consists of urinalyses. It is required once the prospective employee has passed the required postal exam, and cleared the interview. A drug test remains valid for three months after it is conducted.

The prospective employee is asked to empty everything in the pocket, and then go to the bathroom. The tester will stand outside as you fill the cup with urine.

Once you hand over the cup, the tester will put a stick in the cup. If the stick shows a yellow hue, the tester will then proceed to put a sample of the urine in another cup and mixes it with some chemical to check for opiates, weed, or coke.

If the individual passes the drug test, the hiring process will proceed. Otherwise, the individual will become indelible for the postal service job. Also, an individual that fails to respond to the test will be considered ineligible. The HR has the discretion to reschedule the test for an individual that does not appear for the screaming.

Does USPS Allow a Person who has failed a Drug Test?

Individuals who have failed a drug screening are disqualified for the postal service job. However, the disqualification is not for an indefinite period. A person can again apply for the post after the lapse of three months. However, before that time, the individual cannot apply for the federal job. 

USPS conducts the drug testing to ensure a drug-free and professional environment. Applicants who use drugs that are illegal according to the federal law are considered inappropriate for the postal service job. Remember that the USPS considers the federal law and not the state or local laws regarding the legal status of drugs.
